Lucknow, India — A fresh wave of religious and legal tensions has emerged in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, centering on the Janeta Sharif Dargah located in the Chandausi tehsil. The historic site, said to be centuries old, is now under scrutiny following allegations of illegal occupation and financial irregularities.
The controversy follows a complaint lodged with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath by a local resident, who claims that an individual named Shahid has unlawfully seized land connected to Mojamia Shah’s shrine and several other tombs in Janeta village. The case has drawn widespread attention and could potentially spark community-level unrest if unresolved.
Disputed Claims on Religious Property and Revenue RecordsLocal authorities have launched a formal investigation after receiving complaints that the dargah is located on government land. District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia ordered a probe into the matter, which includes examining financial misconduct during the annual fair held at the shrine.
According to Tehsildar Dhirendra Pratap Singh, the administration had previously sought documentation from the dargah’s caretaker, Dr. Syed Shahid Miyan, who submitted evidence claiming the property is waqf land. However, revenue records reportedly do not confirm its registration as waqf property. Instead, the land is officially recorded under the name of the dargah itself, including during earlier land consolidation processes.
This legal discrepancy has intensified the debate between locals asserting waqf status and administrative officials relying on revenue archives.
Annual Religious Fair Suspended Amid Legal UncertaintyTraditionally, the Janeta Sharif Dargah hosts a four-day religious fair drawing vendors and devotees from surrounding districts. However, due to the ongoing dispute and lack of legal clarity, the local administration has invoked Section 63 of the UP Revenue Code, halting this year’s festivities just five days before their scheduled start.
The cancellation has not only affected religious activities but also disrupted local commerce tied to the fair, prompting frustrations among residents and traders.
Officials have confirmed that further action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The case reflects growing tensions in land disputes involving religious properties, especially when legal records and traditional claims diverge.
