Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen on Tuesday said that Israel and the United States launched multiple airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport , shortly after Israel issued an evacuation warning for the area.
“American-Israeli aggression targets Sanaa International Airport with a series of raids,” the rebels’ Al-Masirah TV reported, describing it as a coordinated strike.
AFP correspondents in the capital confirmed hearing a series of explosions and seeing smoke rise from several locations, including the airport.
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Avichay Adraee posted a warning on social media urging civilians to leave the area around the airport immediately, calling it a “danger zone.” He shared a map and wrote, “Failure to evacuate the area endangers your lives.”
There were no immediate reports of casualties from the Sanaa strikes.
The escalation follows a missile launched on Sunday by the Houthis that struck near Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, the first such incident since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023. The attack lightly injured four people and briefly halted flights.
In response, Israel struck Houthi targets in Yemen's Red Sea province of Hodeida on Monday night, killing at least one person and injuring 35, according to the rebel media office. The strikes reportedly targeted both the port and a cement factory.
The Houthis, who say they act in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, have intensified attacks on Israel in recent months. While most of their projectiles have been intercepted, several have caused damage on Israeli soil.
The US has also carried out airstrikes against the Houthis since March 15, under a renewed military campaign launched during the Trump administration’s final months.
Israel has previously struck Yemen multiple times in retaliation for drone and missile attacks, including a deadly drone assault in July and another missile strike in September that targeted Ben Gurion airport as Netanyahu was returning to Israel.
