NEP 2020 drives push for learning in Indian languages, says education minister Pradhan

NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan , on Friday held an interactive session with scholars representing five newly classified classical languages—Prakrit, Pali, Marathi, Bangla, and Assamese.

The event, attended by Chamu Krishna Shastry, chairperson, Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti , M Jagadesh Kumar, chairperson, UGC, as well as academicians, scholars, and officials from the ministry.

Earlier on October 3, the union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the recognition of these five languages as classical languages .

During the interaction, scholars expressed their gratitude to the Prime Minister for recognising these languages as classical and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting and enriching them. They highlighted the significance of this recognition in the preservation of India's diverse cultural and linguistic identity.

Pradhan emphasized the government's dedication to promoting learning in Indian languages , aligning with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He reiterated Modi's belief that all languages spoken in the country are inherently Indian, and the government is taking significant steps to strengthen the learning and teaching of these languages.

"The soul of India lives through its languages," said Pradhan. He further elaborated on the government’s plans to enhance the global presence of Indian languages, fostering multilingualism, and supporting learning in one's mother tongue. The initiative, he said, reflects the government’s commitment to promoting linguistic diversity and ensuring equal emphasis on all Indian languages, both within the country and on an international stage.

This move is seen by the scholars as a significant step toward recognizing the cultural and historical importance of these languages, further contributing to India's linguistic and intellectual legacy.
