Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday said Mahayuti govt in Maharashtra would ensure resumption of the traditional worship of live cobra snakes during Nag Panchami in Battis Shirala town of Sangli district.
Bombay high court in 2014 banned Nag Panchami celebrations in Battis Shirala in 2014 after a decade-long battle led by wildlife activists, who had petitioned against procession of live snakes in the town.
"Vote bank politics was the reason behind stopping Nag Panchami celebrations. MVA govt, citing some law, stopped Nag Panchami celebrations. Once our govt is formed, the worship of 'nagas' (cobra snakes) with all rituals will start in such a way that the respect of law is maintained and the celebrations take place in the traditional form," Shah said while speaking in the Shirala assembly constituency.
