NEW DELHI: The first session of newly elected Jammu and Kashmir assembly kickstarted with an uproar on Monday. After electing National Conference leader Abul Rahim Rather as speaker, a ruckus broke out over Article 370 in the first assembly session held after six years.
After introduction of a resolution opposing the revocation of Article 370 and restoration of the special status of J&K by the People's Democratic Party leader Waheed Para, chief minister Omar Abdullah said that it was brought merely 'for the cameras' and a single MLA's private resolution carries no meaning.
He added that if there had been a genuine intention behind the resolution, it should have been discussed with the National Conference.
"We knew that preparation for this was being made by a member. The reality is that the people of JK do not approve of the decision taken on 5th August 2019. If they had approved, then the results today would have been different. How the House will reflect and discuss this will not be decided by any one member," Abdullah said.
"The resolution brought today has no importance but it is only for the cameras. If there was a purpose behind it, then they would have discussed this with us before," he added.
Meanwhile, PDP supremo Mehbooba Mufti supported her MLA for introducing the resolution in the assembly.
"Proud of Waheed Parra for introducing resolution in JK Assembly opposing the revocation of Article 370 and resolve to restore the special status God bless you," Mehbooba Mufti wrote in a post on X.
Earlier on the day, the assembly elected veteran National Conference leader and seven-time MLA Abdul Rahim Rather as its speaker as the first listed transaction of the business of the session.
CM Abdullah and protem speaker Mubarak Gul congratulated Rather as he took Chair in the House.
Abdullah said, "Honourable speaker, I would like to congratulate you on behalf of the whole House. You were probably the natural choice to take responsibility for this post. You have served the people by sometimes being in the party and sometimes by being in the opposition. Now, you are the custodian of the House."
The first session will conclude on November 8. Besides the L-G's address, there will be obituary references for former legislators who passed away since the last session of the erstwhile J-K Assembly on November 5.
The assembly will also hold a discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the L-G's address om November 6 and 7.
In the recently concluded Jammu and Kashmir assembly election, the National Conference-Congress alliance won 49 out of 90 seats. Meanwhile, BJP emerges as the largest opposition party with 29 seats.
