NEW DELHI: The vote counting for the 90-member assembly in Jammu and Kashmir is underway, marking the first election in the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370 five years ago. Results for over 25 seats have already been announced, with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leading in 41 seats and securing victory in 15, according to the Election Commission .

JKNC leader Omar Abdullah has won the Budgam constituency by 36,010 votes and is also leading in the Ganderbal constituency.

A three-tier security system has been implemented across all 20 counting centres in the region to ensure a smooth process. An Election Commission official confirmed that the votes would be fully tallied by Tuesday, revealing the outcomes for the 873 candidates who contested.

The election was conducted in three phases. The first two phases, covering 50 seats, took place on September 18, while the final phase, consisting of the remaining 40 seats, was held on October 1.

Exit polls released on Saturday suggested that the JKNC-Congress alliance is poised to secure a majority of the seats. While the BJP is expected to slightly improve its 2014 tally of 25 seats, it remains a contender. In contrast, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), which previously won 28 seats, is predicted to perform poorly, with fewer than 10 seats this time.
