Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: Tips to keep fruits fresh for longer duration during the festive season

Send Push
As we get ready to welcome Bappa into our homes this Ganesh Chaturthi, there’s so much to prepare - from decorations to planning the perfect prasad, every detail counts. Among the many offerings, fruits that we present to Bappa hold a special place. Also, with every guest offering fruits to Bappa, there is always abundance of it at home, and with the festivities stretching over several days, keeping those fruits fresh can be a challenge. Don't worry, though— here are some tips from Anup Bhargava, Product Group Head of Refrigerators at Godrej Appliances to ensure your fruits stay as fresh as your devotion throughout the entire celebration.

Choose Your Fruits Wisely
When picking fruits for Ganesh Chaturthi, it’s smart to choose ones that naturally last longer. Apples, bananas, oranges are popular choices, but you can also add in pomegranates, pears and guavas to add variety to your prasad. You can also try to pick fruits that are a little under-ripe, as they will ripen perfectly during the festival, ensuring they stay fresh throughout.

Regular Inspection is the Key
Check your fruits every couple of days for any soft spots or decolouration. If you spot any over-ripe ones, consume them first. Be sure to remove any rotten fruits immediately, as they can contaminate and spoil the rest of your fruits.

Separate Your Fruits
Some fruits release a natural gas called ethylene that can speed up the ripening process of other fruits. For example, bananas and apples are big ethylene producers, so it’s best to store them away from more sensitive fruits like grapes and berries. Keeping ethylene-producing fruits separate helps prevent premature spoilage, ensuring all your offerings last longer.

Store Fruits the Right Way
Fruits like grapes, cherries and other berries can be stored in the fridge in containers lined with paper towels to keep them fresh for longer. For other fruits like apples, oranges, and guavas consider using paper or mesh bags that allow airflow while preventing excess moisture build-up. Bananas, however, have a lesser shelf-life and should be kept at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Wrapping their stems in aluminium foil or wet tissues can also slow down the ripening process, helping them stay fresh longer While whole fruits generally stay fresh longer, pre-cut fruits are also commonly offered during Ganesh Chaturthi. If you prefer to present cut fruits or make fruit salads for your guests, ensure they are stored in airtight containers and kept refrigerated.

Mind the Moisture
Especially during the monsoon season, moisture can cause fruits to spoil quickly. To combat this, make sure to pat your fruits dry after washing and before storing them in your refrigerator. When storing them in the refrigerator, it’s best to use the fruit tray, which is designed to maintain the right balance of humidity and airflow.

This Ganesh Chaturthi, make sure your fruit offerings to Bappa are fresh and vibrant. Remember, a little bit of planning and care goes a long way in ensuring that your offerings reflect the love and devotion you put in this festival.
