UK-based game developer Jagex has officially launched RuneScape : Dragonwilds, its new open-world survival crafting game , in early access on Steam—just weeks after it was first revealed. The surprise release was announced during a developer livestream initially intended to share more details and a launch date, which turned out to be the same day. RuneScape: Dragonwilds was first teased in 2022 and resurfaced in October 2024 when Jagex began looking for testers for a survival title set in the RuneScape universe . A teaser trailer followed on March 31, but few details about gameplay have been revealed so far, aside from what's listed on the game's Steam page.
RuneScape Dragonwilds is now available on Steam for early access: What to expect
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is expected to deviate from the classic RuneScape experience, but it is still being marketed as "RuneScape at its core." This means that players can expect a range of quests and a body of lore to explore, along with new features that help establish its position within the RuneScape universe.
In a statement to PC Gamer, Jesse America , Jagex's executive producer, said: “We’ve been working hard to develop an entirely new type of RuneScape experience that ignites fans’ passion, creativity and love for questing, and provide them with an all-new RuneScape adventure to discover. And this is just the start of our development journey. Throughout Early Access, we’ll be updating the game regularly with new content and features, while listening closely to the community to deliver an iconic open world survival crafting game that is loved equally by our biggest RuneScape fans and new players alike.”
In Ashenfall (where the game is set), players will engage in typical survival crafting activities such as gathering resources, foraging, and advancing through various skill trees. They will have opportunities to develop runecrafting and woodcutting skills and unlock additional abilities needed to overcome new enemies.
The game also includes classic RuneScape elements like farming runes and using magic both in combat and to facilitate survival tasks, such as easily cutting down multiple trees at once.
