Rifle‑toting gunman kills four at NFL HQ and Blackstone in Midtown NYC rampage

Midtown Manhattan, the epicenter of New York City corporate and cultural might, was thrown into bedlam Monday night when shots were fired at 345 Park Avenue. The skyscraper, home to the NFL headquarters, private equity behemoth Blackstone, and consulting firm KPMG, was the scene of a gruesome crime. A deadly shooting left four dead, including a top NYPD officer who was off duty.

The shooter, who was wielding a high-powered rifle, shot himself dead after causing havoc in the lobby and higher floors of the skyscraper. He left the city stunned and with many questions unanswered.
Killer's Las Vegas to Park Avenue trailThe deadly incident took place shortly after 6:30 p.m. on July 28, in what was supposed to be the normal evening rush. However, its rhythm was disrupted by 27-year-old Las Vegas resident Shane Devon Tamura. He had a documented history of mental health issues and entered the building armed with an AR-15-style rifle.

The violence started in the lobby, where he shot and killed Officer Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD police officer. He was hired by the owner of the building, Rudin Properties, to provide security. Islam had worked since December 2021 and was also a father and husband of two with another child on the way.

Tamura then shot at a woman taking cover behind a pillar and shot a security guard who had taken cover behind a desk. Shivering, he released one woman after she emerged from an elevator and found herself face-to-face with him.

The rampage was extended to the 33rd floor, where he murdered another individual close to the Rudin Management offices before shooting himself. The second man wounded in the lobby was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Investigations established that Tamura had come from Las Vegas to New York City earlier that day. He came into the city through New Jersey before showing up at 345 Park Avenue with a legally owned firearm.

A retired security guard at a Las Vegas casino, Tamura had failed to report to work on Sunday, raising initial suspicions. Police found a car with Nevada plates that belonged to Tamura after the shooting with a revolver, ammunition, gun magazines, and prescription drugs. Security cameras captured him strolling into the plaza with the assault rifle strapped over his shoulder. His motive is still unknown, although the premeditated nature of the attack is extremely alarming.
Barricades brought panic, and a city in mourningAs the sound of gunfire reverberated within the skyscraper, Blackstone employees and others panicked to find cover behind furniture and doors. Others cowered in conference rooms, messaging each other on chat apps quietly, as police cars, ambulances, and gaping onlookers thronged the streets outside.

The FBI and New York Police Department collaborated to seal the area by 8 p.m., with helicopters swooping overhead and bomb disposal teams sweeping the area for other dangers.

Officer Islam's death shook the city. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch referred to the act as pure evil. And Mayor Adams lamented the victims and urged New Yorkers to be on guard. The witnesses recounted the horrifying sound of the gun, the urgency of the attack, and the otherworldly chaos of the scene.
What comes next for security in New York's power hubsThis brazen act of violence within one of the city's most secure office buildings raises serious questions. How did a gunman armed with a rifle get so far in? Are existing security measures sufficient to protect against such threats?

As authorities reconstruct Tamura's activities and motives, corporate executives and city officials will need to come to terms with the vulnerability of high-profile office buildings.

New York has seen its share of tragedy, but the 345 Park Avenue attack is a chilling escalation. As it departs, the city is left grieving the victims and bracing for the tough conversations that lie ahead about safety, mental health, and safeguarding the spaces.
