Amazon appoints Samir Kumar, 25-year company veteran as India country manager

Amazon announced on Wednesday (September 18) that it has appointed Samir Kumar as the country manager for India, over a month after Manish Tiwary , the head of Amazon's India operations, quit the e-commerce giant.

Kumar is an Amazon veteran since 1999 and will assume operational responsibilities for India starting October 1, the company announced.

Amazon’s 25 -year veteran Samir Kumar will oversee Amazon's India consumer business as Manish Tiwary, current Country Manager for Amazon India, has decided to explore an opportunity outside Amazon.

Amit Agarwal, Amazon’s SVP for Emerging Markets, today announced in an internal email that Samir Kumar will take on the responsibility to lead India as its Country Manager, in addition to his current charter of leading Amazon’s consumer businesses in the Middle East, South Africa and Turkey.

Samir, who joined Amazon in 1999, was a part of the original team that planned and launched Amazon.in in 2013.

With this change, the current Amazon.in leadership team of Saurabh Srivastava (Categories), Harsh Goyal (Everyday Essentials), Amit Nanda (Marketplace), and Aastha Jain (Growth Initiatives) will now report to Samir. Kishore Thota (Emerging Markets Shopping Experience) will report to Amit directly.

Samir is working closely with Manish Tiwary on the transition, and will assume operational responsibilities for India starting October 1.


“I am deeply appreciative of Manish’s leadership in steering Amazon.in to become the de facto starting point for Indians to buy and sell anything online. I wish him the best for his next chapter,” said Amit Agarwal, SVP for Emerging Markets, on the transition.

Why Manish Tiwary quit Amazon Tiwary, who joined Amazon India in 2016 as Vice President, was elevated to the role of Country Manager four years later in 20, resigned from the company in August. The company said that Tiwary "decided to pursue an opportunity outside of the company."

The company praised Tiwary's eight-year tenure, crediting his leadership for making Amazon.in “the preferred marketplace in India.” Tiwary will remain with Amazon until October to “ensure a smooth transition.”
