Jim Ross shares personal health update
WWE Hall of Famer and legendary wrestling commentator Jim Ross has revealed he has been diagnosed with colon cancer. The 73-year-old, affectionately known to fans as “Good Ol’ JR,” shared the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on May 15, 2025.
“Diagnosed this week with colon cancer,” he wrote. “Surgery being scheduled in the next week or two. I appreciate your concern and support.”
Ross, who currently works for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as a commentator and senior adviser, has faced several health battles in recent years. The news was first reported by multiple outlets including Metro and The Sun, with Ross himself confirming it directly via social media.
A long battle with health issues
Ross’s colon cancer diagnosis adds to a series of serious medical challenges he has endured over the past few years. In 2021, he revealed he had been diagnosed with skin cancer and underwent over 20 radiation treatments to overcome it by 2023. Even after treatment, he continued to deal with lingering wounds from radiation therapy.
In February 2024, Ross shared that he was recovering from a broken hip and was seen using a cane. He told fans at the time, “First full day on Jax Beach and out of the rehab facility! Using a cane for now. Improving daily. Broken hip responding well.”
Almost exactly a year prior to this latest update, in 2024, Ross was admitted to the ER for breathing difficulties. “Unexpected trip to ER in Norman this morning. Shortness of the breath. That’s all for now,” he tweeted at the time, offering limited details.
Legacy in wrestling and continued work with AEW
Despite his health setbacks, Jim Ross remains an active figure in the professional wrestling world. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest commentators in wrestling history, most notably serving as the voice of WWE ’s “Attitude Era” alongside Jerry “The King” Lawler. During his decades-long career, he also worked closely with names like Michael Cole and was influential in signing future stars such as John Cena , Randy Orton , and Trish Stratus.
Ross joined AEW in 2019, where he continues to contribute both on and off the screen. In addition to his commentary work, he serves as a senior adviser for the promotion, led by Tony Khan.
Reactions from fans and wrestling community
Following his announcement, an outpouring of support flooded social media. Inside The Ropes editor Kenny McIntosh wrote: “JR is a fighter. So much love for Jim, and sending all the positive vibes for him for this surgery and his recovery .”
AEW star and longtime wrestler Matt Hardy wrote on X:
“Love ya, JR! Thinking about & praying for you, my friend.”
Fans and fellow broadcasters also offered their thoughts. Sports journalist Ariel Helwani added: “God bless you, JR. Wishing you the very best. We are all praying and pulling for you.”
Comments from fans underlined the emotional impact of the news, with one posting, “Oh God, sorry to hear that JR. Wish you all the best,” and another adding, “Thinking of you JR. Get well soon.”
Looking ahead
Ross’s surgery is expected to take place within the next one to two weeks. While the WWE and AEW communities await further updates, the overwhelming response highlights the deep respect and admiration for a man whose voice and presence have defined an era in professional wrestling.
Ross has not confirmed whether he will take time away from his AEW duties during recovery. For now, fans and colleagues alike continue to rally around him with hopes for a full and swift recovery.
