A new study has revealed the 'dirtiest' city in the United States, and you will be surprised to know that New York City is not even in the top ten 'Dirtiest Cities of America"
HouseFresh, an indoor air quality imprint, conducted the study and revealed its parameters of analysis. “From clean drinking water to sewage disposal, littered streets to missed garbage pick-ups, we analysed 12.3 million sanitation-related 311 complaints in a series of U.S. cities to reveal which metropolises need to clean up their act,” wrote the authors of the study. “We ranked locations based on the number of sanitation-related reports per 100,000 population”, they added.
The dirtiest city in the US
Baltimore , in Maryland, landed as the dirtiest city in the United States of America with a shocking rate of 47,295 complaints per 100,000 population. There seems to be a disconnect between the needs of the community and the cleanliness of the city. [Baltimore] is home to six of the dirtiest ZIP codes, each located either in or around the city’s centre,” said the investigators.
The second in the list is Sacramento, California, which “houses the largest river in California, and its waters, according to a recent report from The Environmental Integrity Project, are some of the most polluted in the country,” as per the report.
Is New York one of the dirtiest cities in America?
“The city has a surprisingly low complaint rate of 3,728 per 100,000 population — in comparison to the 21,616 complaints made by the inhabitants of the glamorous — albeit dry, dusty and dirty — Los Angeles,” said the examiners about NYC. It was ranked 17th on the list of America's 23 dirtiest cities. While the city may have saved face in cleanliness, it still has some areas to focus on. “We found that the highest-complaining ZIP code, with 7,664 reports, came from Brooklyn,” revealed the analysts.
Previously, in a 2022 poll, NYC had been termed as the 'world's second dirtiest city' and thus its 17th rank now still seems to be one worth the celebration. The Sanitation Department also launched a new campaign last summer, urging people to report on their filthy neighbours who would then be displayed in the city's virtual "Hall of Shame"
Cleanest city in America
Milwaukee, in Wisconsin, was reported as the cleanest city in America by the study with only 309 complaints linked to the cleanliness conditions.
Other clean cities are Riverside, Philadelphia, Austin, San Francisco and Miami. Whereas in the third, fourth and fifth position as dirtiest cities lie Charlotte, Los Angeles and Memphis.
