Aizawl: African Swine Fever (ASF) has claimed the lives of 4,100 pigs in Mizoram since the resurgence of its outbreak was confirmed by a laboratory in Guwahati on March 20, state animal husbandry and veterinary department officials said on Sunday.
Daily casualty of pigs on Sunday was registered at 12 in four localities of Siaha town while there was no record of pigs being culled on the same day.
The officials said the ASF resurgence has spread to 54 localities in four towns — district headquarters of Siaha, Lawngtlai and Lunglei in southern Mizoram bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh and Zawlnuam town of Mamit district bordering Bangladesh, Tripura and Assam which are declared as ASF infected localities.
Siaha district remains the hardest hit with 2,417 pig casualties so far in 29 neighbourhoods in the town, followed by 1,436 pig casualties in 17 localities of Lawngtlai town and 173 pig deaths in three localities of Zawlnuam town and 74 deaths in Lunglei town's 5 neighbourhoods.
