Washington Black airs on Hulu and Disney Plus and the series is based on the book of the same name by Esi Edugyan.
Edugyan was inspired by stories of slavery from throughout history when she penned the book, which follows the 19th century adventures of George Washington "Wash" Black (played by Ernest Kingsley Jr).
As an 11-year-old boy, he was forced to flee his home on a Barbados sugar plantation following a gruesome death.
The series has kept fans on the edge of their seats with its stellar cast, which includes Sterling K Brown as Medwin Harris and Tom Ellis as Wilde.
Here is all you need to know about the show's future beyond the first season.
Washington Black is made up of eight episodes, which were all released at the same time on Hulu and Disney Plus.
Unfortunately for fans, it seems the series will not move beyond a first season, as it has been described as a miniseries.
In March 2019 the rights for the novel were bought by 20th Television and by September of that year, it was reported an adaptation was in development at Hulu with Sterling K. Brown attached as executive producer.
In October 2021, it was announced Hulu had given the production a series order to a limited television adaptation of the novel.
With this in mind, it appears the story will be told in a concise eight episodes, with a conclusive ending.
The series has already received rave reviews from critics, with Sherin Cole saying on Rotten Tomatoes: "The series transforms a harrowing flight from retaliation into a visually lush quest for identity and freedom, blending historical drama with the heart and wonder of a coming-of-age epic."
Carly Lane from Collider added: "Overall, the pleasure of watching a show like Washington Black is the mere fact that it exists, rooted in joy, adventure, romance, and self-discovery."
The Guardian listed the series as one of the top seven shows to watch this week.
