You never know what treasures you might find lurking in your attic.
Perhaps a stash of Pokemon cards, or even more exciting, a collection of rare coins. It's no secret that coin collecting is all the rage at the moment, especially after a rare 50p coin could earn you 'big money' - if it features certain detail.
Now over on TikTok,user @CoinCollectingWizard, who amassed an impressive following of 201,800, recently revealed why you should never clean your old coins and highlighted a particular design to watch out for.
The viral video begins with someone cleaning a 2p coin, yielding surprising results. He explained: "You should never clean your coins and here is why...
"A 2p coin is usually copper-coloured but this specific coin was mistakenly minted on the same base as a 10p coin. Given that the Royal Mint produces between 3-4 million coins a day, it's understandable that errors can occur."
Describing the coin further, he added: "This penny is known as a mule or an error coin making them 'super rare' and therefore 'super valuable' to collectors as they're nearly unique. But if you think that's special, wait until you see the next coin.
"The 1983 New Pence Two Pence is considered rare due to a specific change in the design. In 1983, the Royal Mint started the process of changing the inscription on the coin from New Pence to Two Pence.
"If you stumble upon this rare coin, you could be looking at over £1,000."
After the video unveiling helpful tips was posted, it quickly racked up close to 200 likes and a slew of comments.
One person cautioned: "Someone doesn't know. Don't clean old coins..." Another confessed: "I have a lot of these coins."
A third chimed in with an offer: "I have plenty of them if you're interested."
