Peace lilies won't wilt or turn brown if placed next to 1 item in the home

Peace lilies are one of the most popular houseplants around, and for good reason. With their shiny dark green leaves, they instantly add a jungle-like vibe to your living space - and the best part is they're fairly easy to look after as well.

However, like all plants, they do have their quirks. Peace lilies are known for being a little bit dramatic, and they can wilt or turn brown almost overnight if you don't give them the right care. However, according to expert Callum Maddock from HomeHow, there's a very easy way to prevent this from happening.

How to look after peace lilies

Like all plants, peace lilies will need watering regularly so that the compost never completely dries out. It is also important, however, not to overwater and allow the soil to become waterlogged.

As a general rule you should wait until the top few centimetres of soil or compost have dried out before watering again. When a peace lily is dehydrated, it will begin to wilt, so look out for this as a sign that it needs watering.

Why is my peace lily wilting?

If you're keeping on top of your watering but still find that your peace lily's leaves are wilting or turning brown, then Callum has an excellent tip.

He said: "Brown tips and signs of wilting indicate that your peace lily needs more humidity. Try placing it near to a humidifier for that extra moisture boost."

This should give it the conditions it needs to perk up again, making it look lively and thriving in your home.

Why is my peace lily covered in spots?

Another common problem that peace lily owners face is that the leaves can become covered in spots. When this happens, you should never ignore it, as this symptom could be a warning sign of a potential issue.

Callum said: "Spotty leaves can indicate that your peace lily is suffering from a disease such as a fungal or bacterial infection. Prune the infected areas from the plant and ensure that it is receiving plenty of air to recover."

How to prune your peace lily

If you've noticed any dead or spotty leaves or flowers, it's the perfect opportunity to give your peace lily a good prune.

First, identify the parts you want to remove, and cut them off at the base of the stem using secateurs. Peace lilies should also be deadheaded throughout the season - so remove any old or faded flower stalks from the plant, as this will help the production of seed.

However, when you're doing this, make sure to wear gloves. Peace lilies can be toxic, so it's important to take the right precautions when handling them.
