NCIS will soon return for its 22nd season, which will continue to take long-running agent Nick Torres (played by Wilmer Valderrama) to some extremely dark places.

An action-packed teaser trailer for the upcoming outing has just been released, promising plenty of jaw-dropping moments over the 2024-2025 season on CBS.

This time round, the team will be hunting for a traitor within their midst.

New team leader Alden Parker (Gary Cole) is racing against the clock to unearth the rogue agent before a bomb is dropped on the NCIS.

"We've gotta stop that mole without starting a war," he tells Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) at one point in the trailer.

Elsewhere, NCIS doctors Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover) have a plan that involves "some favours and a little light treason".

More footage of shootouts, chases and chilling murder investigations play out over the song Stand Up.

While the biggest talking point of the trailer is arguably an ominous warning from Torres, "If you want me to kill one of my own, I need a good reason."

Could NCIS be about to drop a double bombshell that, not only is one of the major agents a traitor but they'll also be killed off by Torres at some point in season 22?

Fans are in agreement that the upcoming instalment looks like one of the show's best yet.

"Well, holy f***, this season is gotta be way more insane and holy f*** moment than any other season. This gotta top them all," someone said on Reddit.

"Okay, waking up from a nap to see 1 of the greatest NCIS trailers you've seen in a very long time, is quite the experience!!" another said on X (formerly Twitter).

Although another Redditor pointed out a slight issue with the upcoming storyline.

"Another mole? Guess it's been a couple years since the last one," they wrote.

"They might want to look into better security measures and IT security if they keep having moles."

Keen-eared NCIS and music aficionados may have also spotted a touching yet easy-to-miss tribute to Donald 'Ducky' Mallard star David McCallum, who appeared in the series until his death in September last year.

The melody of the trailer song Stand Up's pre-chorus is very similar to David's iconic jazz song The Edge, which was later sampled in the hip-hop hit The Next Episode by Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg.

Expect plenty more tributes to Ducky and more heart-stopping action when the new season of NCIS kicks off in just under a month's time.

NCIS season 22 premieres Monday, October 14 on CBS and is available to stream on Disney+.
