Reports now suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to 'indefinitely' suspend the IPL, following . A source told IANS India: "BCCI wants to stand with the nation at this time and thus suspends IPL 2025 with immediate effect.
"It's indefinite at the moment (on a window to resume IPL 2025 in future). It will only happen if there will be time later in the year. But for now nothing."
A formal announcement is expected to take place shortly.
Conflict has intensified this week in Kashmir, an area controlled by Pakistan. It is the latest in a history of disputes over the region, which was fought over following both countries' independence from each other in 1947. On Wednesday morning, India launched a series of missile strikes on nine targets in Pakistan and Kashmir.
Pakistan has accused India of deliberately targeting civilians, and retaliated. It claims to have killed up to 50 Indian soldiers and its prime minister boasted that it only "took a few hours" to bring the Indian millitary "to its knees". India claims Pakistan sent missiles and drones into a number of regions. Both countries possess nuclear firepower.
The tension prompted horrifying scenes at the IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals this week. The fixture was abandoned mid-match over reported security fears.
A member of staff at the stadium claimed fans had shouted "bombs are coming" and floodlights were dramatically turned off. Players were dragged off the pitch to protect their safety. Television coverage was taken off air, with former England star Graeme Swann providing commentary.
The BCCI blamed a "significant technical failure" over the incident.
IPL is currently 58 games into the season, including the abandoned match in in Dharamsala. Twelve games still remain, although it is unclear when they will be played. It is claimed that the BCCI hope to resume the 2025 season at a later date.
