At 64 years old, Jay Kishore Pradhan has shown that age is no barrier to pursuing one’s dreams by successfully passing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) in 2020. A former Deputy Manager at the State Bank of India (SBI), Pradhan was inspired to enter the medical field after watching his twin daughters prepare for the same exam. With a determination to fulfill his long-held aspiration, he embarked on a challenging journey to become a doctor.
For many, retirement is a time to relax and enjoy life after years of hard work. However, for Pradhan, it was the perfect opportunity to chase his dreams. Although he had previously attempted the NEET exam shortly after completing his intermediate studies, he was unsuccessful. Yet, witnessing his daughters' dedication reignited his passion for medicine. Rather than living vicariously through them, Pradhan decided it was time to pursue his own medical aspirations.
A significant obstacle was the age limit for NEET candidates, which initially made him ineligible to sit for the exam. However, a 2019 ruling by the Supreme Court, which eliminated the upper age restriction for applicants, opened the door for him to take the test. Grateful for this chance, Pradhan began preparing for the exam.
Preparing for NEET is a rigorous endeavor, demanding extensive dedication and commitment to mastering the syllabus. To facilitate his studies, Pradhan enrolled in an online coaching program that provided structured guidance on tackling the exam content. Balancing his studies with family responsibilities proved challenging, but his resolve to succeed never wavered.
Through hard work, resilience, and unwavering passion, Pradhan passed the NEET exam with impressive results in 2020. He is now enrolled in the MBBS program at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Odisha. With his sights set on a future in private medical practice, he continues to inspire others by demonstrating that it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams.
