An interesting piece of information has emerged after Rishabh Pant was not retained by Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Pant's nine-year association with the 2020 finalists came to an end as the franchise released him. Axar remained the team's first choice in the retention list. However, a new report has revealed that Pant was unhappy with the decisions taken by co-owners GMR Group. GMR Group will run the franchise for the next two years. GMR Group had also recently made changes in the coaching staff.
According to a report by news agency PTI, Pant was unhappy with the decision to appoint Hemang Badani as the head coach and Venugopal Rao as the Director of Cricket at DC. Apart from this, it is reported that Pant was also unhappy with his powers being curbed by the GMR Group. Earlier, it was reported that Delhi Capitals were considering taking away the captaincy from Pant and handing it over to Axar Patel.
Pant was included in the team of Delhi Capitals through auction in 2016. He was retained before the last two mega auctions. Even Pant was seen sitting at the auction table with the franchise in the last mega auction and taking decisions. Delhi Capitals is owned 50-50 percent between JSW Group and GMR Group. Each group runs the franchise for two years. In the 2025 and 2026 IPL, Delhi Capitals will be under the GMR Group and will play under their direction.
It was the decision of the GMR Group that led to DC deciding to part ways with Ricky Ponting. Ponting was the head coach of the team for seven years. India's legendary cricketer Sourav Ganguly was removed as the team's Director of Cricket. These changes have made Pant unhappy and have given him a reason to look for a different franchise in the auction. Pant will arguably be the most sought-after name in the auction pool this year. He has won the T20 World Cup 2024 with the Indian team this year.
