Real-life killer slams Netflix series Monsters after shocking Menendez brothers murder

Netflix has been slammed by the real-life killer its new smash-hit series, Monsters, is based upon.

The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story tells the shocking story of brothers Erik and Lyle, who are both in prison with no chance of parole after being found guilty of the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty.

The Netflix show follows the events of 1989 when the siblings claimed they killed their parents out of fear and in self-defence after a lifetime of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. The trial became a media sensation, but some have now criticised what they claim are factual errors in the show, including implications of an incestuous relationship between the brothers.

One of the complainants is felon, Erik, who took to a Facebook page run by Lyle's family, while in prison, to rubbish Netflix's version of events.

He fumed: “I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show. I can only believe they were done so on purpose. It is with a heavy heart that I say I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naïve and inaccurate about the facts of our lives so as to do this without bad intent."

Continuing, Erik wrote: “It is sad for me to know that Netflix’s dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crime have taken the painful truths several steps backward - back through time to an era when the prosecution built a narrative on a belief system that males were not sexually abused, and that males experienced rape trauma differently than women…"

He concluded, criticising creator, Ryan Murphy: “So now Murphy shapes his horrible narrative through vile and appalling character portrayals of Lyle and of me and disheartening slander. Is the truth not enough? Let the truth stand as the truth."

Erik's wife, Tammi Menendez, who he married while in jail, has also taken to social media to echo his statement. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, she said: “I'm sorry to know I was right,” she wrote. “The Netflix show was [an] insane perversion of the truth and a complete and tragic misrepresentation of Erik and Lyle!”

The brothers were 18 and 21 when they were charged with killing their parents, alleging their father Jose had sexually abused them since the age of six. However, prosecutors argued that they did it for financial gain as their father was an executive at RCA Records at the time of his death.

Erik and Lyle were handed guilty convictions in 1996 after being convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole.

Monsters boasts a star-studded cast, including A listers such as Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny, while rising stars Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch play Lyle and Erik Menendez, respectively.

Following the success of the series, a documentary is due to be released on Netflix in October, which will look at the case closely, and will include interviews from Erik and Lyle conducted over the phone from prison.
