Grim eight word final message Sarco suicide pod users will hear before death

Send Push

The final message people will hear seconds before they die inside a Sarco suicide pod has been revealed - and will leave people chilled.

The Sarco pod, which takes its name from the word "sarcophagus", is a euthanasia device which allows users to trigger their own death by asphyxiation at the Last Resort in Switzerland. The patient lies down in the coffin-like chamber before being asked a series of questions.

After answering them, the person inside will then hear a voice through a speaker - the last thing they will ever hear. It says: “If you want to die, press this button.”

The pod then rapidly depletes itself of oxygen down to unsurvivable levels - from around 21 per cent to 1 per cent in 30 seconds. They lose consciousness and are dead around ten minutes later.

It comes as a Sarco assisted-suicide pod was used for the first time by a woman who died "under a canopy of trees". A 64-year-old American woman is believed to be the first person to have died inside the device .

She is said to have been suffering from "a very serious illness” and had wanted to die for at least two years before her final visit. The Last Resort, the company behind the Sarco, said the woman "had been suffering for many years from a number of serious problems associated with severe immune compromise."

Dr Florian Willet, co-president of The Last Resort lawyers, confirmed the woman's death had been "peaceful, fast and dignified", taking place "under a canopy of trees, at a private forest retreat in the Canton of Schaffhausen close to the Swiss-German border".

The inventor of the Sarco, Philip Nitschke, claimed his pod "had performed exactly as it had been designed to do,' saying it had provided a 'non-drug, peaceful death at the time of the person's choosing".

Switzerland is among the only countries in the world where foreigners can travel to legally end their lives, and is home to a number of organisations dedicated to helping people kill themselves. Police in the north of the country confirmed several people were detained on Monday after being informed an assisted suicide involving the Sarco pod had taken place near a woodland cabin in Merishausen.
