Kolkata: Amid growing tension in Murshidabad over the WAQF bill, West Bengal Mamata Banerjee on Saturday had stated that she will not implement WAQF (Amendment) law in the state.
Taking to X, Mamata urged everyone to maintain peace.
“Appeal To All. My sincere appeal to all people of all religions, please remain calm, remain restrained. Do not engage in any irreligious behaviour in the name of religion. Every human life is precious, do not incite riots for the sake of politics. Those who are inciting riots are harming the society. Remember, we did not make the law that many are agitating against. The law was made by the Central government. Therefore, the answer should be sought from the Central government. We have clearly stated our position on this matter - we do not support this law. This law will not be implemented in our state. So why the riots? Also remember, we will take legal action against those who are inciting riots. We do not condone any violent activity. Some political parties are trying to misuse religion to gain political advantage. Do not fall for their provocation. I believe religion means humanity, goodwill, civilised behaviour and harmony. May everyone maintain peace and harmony - this is my appeal, wrote Mamata.
Countering Mamata, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president and MoS Sukanta Majumdar said, “Mamata Banerjee is instrumental for the violence. She is doing this purposely to turn away the attention of the SCC scam for which nearly 26000 people lost their jobs.”
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said, “Seedhi Baat No Bakwas. Appeasement Clear Hai. "Didi is at our mercy, we are not at Didi's mercy." Mamata Banerjee is riding a tiger, which will devour her if she doesn't toe the line of the radicals. She is not an Administrator at the helm of affairs, she has turned herself into a mere puppet.”
