Shakti Dubey, a name now synonymous with success in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024, has achieved the top rank (AIR 1) after years of hard work and perseverance. Hailing from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, her journey has been anything but easy. With four attempts before this one, including a near-miss in 2023, Dubey’s achievement stands as a powerful testament to resilience and unwavering commitment.
As per the Time of India, graduating in Biochemistry from Allahabad University and later completing her Master’s degree at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Dubey’s academic background laid a solid foundation for her future success. However, it was her deepening interest in governance and public service that led her to set her sights on the prestigious civil services examination.
Overcoming Obstacles: A Story of Persistence
In her previous attempts, Dubey came close to success, especially in 2023, when she missed the cut-off by just 12 marks. Despite the setback, she never lost hope. Reflecting on the journey, she revealed that her brother, who had unwavering faith in her, assured her that she would secure the top spot the following year. "When I missed the cut-off, he told me that I would be able to clear the exam the following year as God had saved that spot for me. His words came true today," she said to ANI, illustrating the importance of support from loved ones in such a challenging journey.
The Moment of Realization: A Shocking Achievement
When the results of the 2024 UPSC examination were announced, Dubey was initially skeptical. She saw her name at the top and thought the rank list might be fake. It was only when her coaching institute confirmed the authenticity of the results that she believed it. "I was very nervous. I thought the PDF [rank list] was fake at first. They [her coaching institute] confirmed that it was correct and they had verified my roll number as well. That's when I finally accepted that this has happened," she shared, describing the intense emotional moment.
Shakti Dubey's Advice for Future UPSC Aspirants
Having made it to the top after years of effort, Shakti Dubey now shares invaluable insights for aspiring civil servants. One of the key pieces of advice she gives is to not let the examination overwhelm your life. "Always remember that this is just an examination. It is not more important than life. If you are confident that you can improve and if your family is supportive, that is all you need," she explained, highlighting the significance of mental well-being and family support throughout the journey.
For those preparing for the UPSC exam, Dubey stresses the importance of strategic studying. She advises aspirants to work with a minimal book list and prioritize practicing questions from previous years. "Work with a minimum book list and focus more on the questions from previous years," Dubey recommended, urging candidates to not get bogged down by excessive study materials.
Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of regular mock tests to get familiar with the exam conditions and the necessity of continuous revision. "Taking multiple mock tests will help you get used to the exam’s conditions, and consistent revisions will ensure that the material stays fresh in your mind," she suggested.
