A freak accident has now made Coldplay’s Australian concert utterly unforgettable and given frontman Chris Martin a “YouTube moment.” Melbourne fans got a nasty shock during the rock-pop band’s final performance at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium when Martin stumbled through a trap door on stage.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Greg Briggs, Chris Martin was spotted engaging with the crowd when he accidentally stepped backward and fell through the trap door.
The audience gasped in surprise, and someone already positioned inside the trap door quickly reached out to soften his fall. The video included the caption, “The moment Chris Martin fell through a trapdoor right in front of me at the #Coldplay concert tonight.”
Martin appeared unfazed and after regaining composure, told the fans, "That wasn't planned. Thank you for catching me so much. Thank you guys, holy s***, that was a YouTube moment."
Interestingly, Martin is not the only musician to have recently fallen through a trap door on stage in Melbourne. On October 18, Olivia Rodrigo also experienced a similar incident while performing at Rod Laver Arena during her “GUTS” tour. Unfazed, she humorously reassured the audience upon her return, saying, “Oh my God, that was fun! I’m okay! Wow. Sometimes, there’s just a hole in the stage. That’s alright! Alright, where was I?”
Rodrigo later revealed on The Tonight Show that she felt “shaken up” and described the experience as “really scary.”
Meanwhile, Marvel Stadium celebrated a significant achievement with Coldplay's four-night engagement, attracting an astonishing 227,000 attendees during their Melbourne performances. This turnout surpassed the long-held record of 181,495 set by AC/DC’s Black Ice tour across three concerts in 2010.
Coldplay has been touring internationally with their Music of the Spheres World Tour since March 2022. After concluding their shows in Melbourne, Martin, along with guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion, will head to Sydney to complete their Australian segment before traveling to New Zealand. The band’s Music of the Spheres World Tour is also set to visit India for three performances in Mumbai in January and will wrap up in September 2025 with a ten-day engagement at Wembley Stadium in London.
