The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall across 23 districts in Karnataka, including Bengaluru, from Monday through Thursday. The alert warns of moderate to heavy thundershowers, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h.
The alert follows a wet weekend for the state capital. On Sunday, Bengaluru was battered by intense rains that led to severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas.
The affected districts include Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru, Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Kodagu, Belagavi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Davanagere, and Chitradurga. Widespread rainfall and thunderstorms are expected throughout the week.
The inclement weather is being driven by an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, along with a trough extending from Telangana to North Tamil Nadu, which is pulling in significant moisture and intensifying rainfall across southern India.

The IMD has also noted that conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance over parts of the South Arabian Sea, which may bring more widespread rain across Karnataka.
Bengaluru authorities on high alert
In response to the yellow alert, BBMP, traffic police, and other civic bodies in Bengaluru have activated emergency plans.
DCP (Traffic-East) Sahil Bagla said that authorities are preparing to handle tree falls and road blockages, while DCP (Traffic-North) Siri Gowri DR confirmed that waterlogging-prone spots have been flagged and shared with BBMP for immediate action.
R. Snehal, Zonal Commissioner (East) at BBMP, added that water-pumping machines will be deployed in vulnerable areas to drain floodwaters and minimize disruption.
Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid flooded roads, and monitor official updates as Karnataka braces for several days of unsettled weather.
Sunday's deluge

In Sai Layout, one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods, floodwaters inundated homes, damaging household belongings, electronic appliances, and partially submerging vehicles. Many affected residents had to shift to safer locations nearby.
Residents blamed clogged drains for the flooding and expressed frustration over ignored complaints to civic authorities. Additionally, tree branches collapsed in several areas, posing further hazards.
The IMD's Sunday bulletin also forecast light to moderate rain with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) in isolated locations across the state over the next few hours. It warned of possible power outages, minor traffic snarls, and the uprooting of weak trees.
