A navigation app is meant to help people find shorter or easier routes. But for five men travelling to Nilambur in north Kerala, it led them into a forest at midnight during heavy rain.

The group, who were from Kalpetta in Wayanad district, were going to attend a function in Nilambur on Sunday. Since they didn’t know the way, they followed a forest path suggested by a popular navigation app, according to fire and rescue officials.

They didn’t actually lose their way, but trouble began when they entered the forest.

"Actually, they didn't lose their way. There is a path through the forest that leads to their destination in Nilambur. However, it was raining heavily when they entered the forest at night, and their car got stuck in one of the marshy pits," a fire and rescue official said.

The forest area is known to have wild animals like elephants and boars, which added to the fear.

The men were scared but somehow managed to contact the local fire station. A rescue team reached the spot soon after.

"The car got stuck in the pit and broke down. So we had to tow it by tying it to our vehicle with a rope," the officer said.

Luckily, the men were safe and later continued their journey.
