As Gujarat sizzles with heatwave conditions with mercury soaring upwards of forty degrees, the stage is set for Congress to hold its all India session from Tuesday in Ahmedabad after a hiatus of sixty four years.
For the principal opposition party in the state that has been precariously losing its electoral ground in the state and practically fighting to retain its relevance, the grand event is expected to inject some vitality. At least, so hopes its leadership, that had come under public fire from none other than leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi recently.
The session has assumed greater significance on the face of Gandhi’s efforts to decentralise the party by empowering the district units more and is expected to iron out a cleansing strategy for the party to get rid of the section of leaders who according to Gandhi are hands in gloves with the rival BJP.
The revival mechanism is given symbolic impetus by choosing Gujarat as the point of initiation banking on the icons like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Vallabhbhai Patel. Congress also is taking the fight to the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi signalling its aggressive intentions, the impetus of which seems to have ebbed post 2024 Loksabha elections.
Rahul Gandhi on his part had thrown the gauntlet to BJP in his address to party workers in Ahmedabad right after 2024 Lok Sabha elections and claimed that the party will win Gujarat just the way it defeated BJP in Ayodhya, the mantle piece of BJP’s electioneering. He has visited the state more than once since and during his last visit minced no word in berating the state leadership for failing to live up to the expectations of the people of the state.
It is expected the session will ascribe additional importance to reclaiming Gujarat where the party is de-facto struggling for relevance after the worst ever electoral performance in the state in 2022 Gujarat elections and subsequent high-profile defections.
Over the years, Congress in Gujarat has helplessly watched its political legacy being steadily chipped away by the ruling dispensation and even faced accusations like having miss treated Vallabhbhai Patel whom BJP honoured by erecting the tallest statue at Kevadia. For the records, this year marks marks the centenary year of the lone presidential term of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
The party will hold the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting at Sardar Patel Memorial in Shahibaug on Tuesday and the AICC session on the “banks of Sabarmati” on Wednesday.
