Years after Sunny Deol revealed he was overlooked in Darr to spotlight Shah Rukh Khan, his younger brother Bobby Deol has now shared his own experience of being removed from one of Bollywood’s most beloved romantic dramas—Jab We Met. In a recent discussion, Bobby recalled feeling deeply disheartened after being unexpectedly cut from the project, even though he had played a key role in its early development alongside actress Kareena Kapoor Khan and filmmaker Imtiaz Ali.
While speaking to Instant Bollywood, Bobby recounted how he first came across the concept for Jab We Met. It was during a viewing of the early cut of Socha Na Tha, directed by Imtiaz and featuring Bobby’s cousin, Abhay Deol. Captivated by Imtiaz’s storytelling, Bobby encouraged the director to craft a script specifically for him. That idea eventually evolved into what would become Jab We Met. “I invested a lot of effort into getting that film made—I contacted numerous people,” Bobby shared.
He emphasized that he played a critical role in bringing the production company Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision into the picture. According to him, the producers were enthusiastic about working with him but were hesitant about backing Imtiaz, who was still a fresh face in the industry. Bobby championed the collaboration and convinced them to give the up-and-coming director a chance.
In addition, Bobby approached Kareena Kapoor Khan through an acquaintance to offer her the female lead. Initially, she wasn’t interested. The role was also offered to Preity Zinta, who declined at that time but indicated she might reconsider in the future.
Despite all his groundwork and dedication, Bobby was eventually removed from the cast. Kareena later changed her mind and joined the film, while Shahid Kapoor replaced Bobby as the male lead. The new pairing went on to become one of the most iconic on-screen duos in Hindi cinema history.
Reflecting on the past, Bobby admitted, “It hurt a lot; I was quite disappointed back then.” Yet, he didn’t hold any grudges against Imtiaz Ali. Instead, he acknowledged that the director likely had to make a tough decision in favor of the film’s vision and outcome.
With rumors swirling about a potential sequel to Jab We Met, Bobby’s revelation adds a new layer of intrigue—could he finally get the opportunity he once lost? Only time will reveal whether destiny brings that long-awaited full-circle moment for him.
