Kolkata Knight Riders will embark on their final home game of with their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. KKR will host Chennai Super Kings, who are down and out of the tournament.
Both teams played out exciting humdingers in their latest respective games, but finished on opposite ends of the result. KKR's last match was also in Kolkata, where they took on the Rajasthan Royals. KKR's decision to bat first didn't yield any awe-inspiring results until Andre Russell switched on. Russell was struggling at the start of his innings, but eventually got going like he never had. His burst allowed KKR to post a total over 200 - a mark that looked far-fetched even with Russell at the crease at one point.
RR, on the other hand, were thrown into an early crisis, losing three wickets in the first seven overs. It got worse before it could get better as Varun Chakravarthy struck twice in the eighth to leave the visitors reeling at 71 for 5. Riyan Parag then took it upon himself in a scintillating display of 95 runs, and even hit Moeen Ali for five sixes in an over at one point. His dismissal eventually brought KKR back into the game. The Knight Riders reduced the equation to 19 runs required from four balls, but there was a final twist.
Shubham Dubey sent Vaibhav Arora for 6, 4, 6 but could not cross the final hurdle as Arora defended three runs off the last ball to give KKR a one-run win.
CSK's last game was against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the latter's den and was full of twists and turns. Virat Kohli and Jacob Bethell got aggressive fifties, but there was a lull once they were dismissed,d as Matheesha Pathirana was breathing fire. It took until the last two overs for RCB to revive their innings. Romario Shepherd took 33 runs off the penultimate over bowled by Khaleel Ahmed and off the last ball of the innings, completing the joint-second fastest fifty of all time in the IPL.
CSK's chase did not get off to the best start, but 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre was up to the task, stitching an important partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. Brick by brick, the two took CSK closer to victory until Mhatre was dismissed for 94 by Lungi Ngidi. Ngidi snared Dewald Brevis under dubious circumstances off the next ball, and that was RCB's way in. After a lot of back and forth, Yash Dayal was eventually tasked with defending 15 off the last over. Dayal dismissed MS Dhoni and conceded only two runs off the first three balls, but the fourth was a disaster.
Shivam Dube sent a beamer into the stands with CSK needing 13 off the last three balls. Faced with defending 6 runs off 3 balls and a free hit, Dayal found himself once again bowling RCB to a two-run win.
The loss to RCB was CSK's fourth in a row. CSK have already had another streak of five consecutive losses in IPL 2025, and the fifth loss of that first streak was in the reverse fixture, in Chennai. KKR's bowlers put up a comprehensive show, restricting the run flow and taking wickets to consign CSK to their lowest ever IPL total at home - 103/9 from 20 overs. Sunil Narine added 44 runs to his 3 wickets as KKR chased it down in half the overs.
KKR will be hoping to get two more points off their last home fixture, especially when even a loss could potentially eliminate them.
