Attention sky lovers! It’s time to look up because the Lyrid Meteor Shower is here. This will be a beautiful sight for stargazers! With a projected peak on April 21 and 22, 2025, this meteor shower will be visible around the world and India is no exception.
However, since the moon will be at 40% brightness on these dates, it could obstruct some of the view. Don't worry, though, there will still be a lot to see!
Best viewing time for the Lyrids in IndiaThe Lyrids will reach their peak on the nights of April 21-22 from 2:00 AM to 5:30 AM IST. While the moon will certainly reduce the brightness of the show, the Lyrids have always been known to have nice meteors and could produce up to 100, or more, meteors per hour in the ideal conditions. Your best chance to catch the shower would be prior to the rise of the waning crescent moon on the night of April 21.

A key feature for viewing meteors is finding the best location to view them. Head to areas with minimal light pollution, away from city lights. A hillside or rural location is perfect for a nice, unobstructed view. Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are ideal locations for meteor viewing since they provide high altitudes and clear skies for viewing meteors.
What can you expect? The Lyrids come from the debris trail of Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which passes through the Earth’s orbit each April. As Earth enters this debris stream, the particles burn up in the atmosphere, creating the stunning streaks of light we call meteors.
The Lyrids are known for their speed and brightness, though they’re not as abundant as other meteor showers like the Perseids. Expect to see around 10-15 meteors per hour, with the occasional bright flash known as a ‘fireball.’ These fast-moving meteors don’t leave long trails but can be quite dazzling when they do appear.
