'Impossible' brainteaser asks you to choose the right cup - but only 1% get it right

Send Push

If you think you're a logical thinker, this seriously hard is for you.

Only 1% of people are able to work out which cup will get full first, meaning this tricky puzzle is for those who have a glass half full approach.

Posted by Daily Quiz and Riddles on X (formerly known as ), it shows a picture of seven cups captioned 'Which cup gets filled first?' and you're asked to try and work it out. While it sounds relatively easy, it has some tricky water dynamics going on and there is more to it than meets the eye.

You'll notice the first cup below the tap has two pipes going into the other cups, so put yourself to the test and see if you are one of the 1% who can guess it correctly. Watch out for the pipes that are blocked, as well as the cups that have holes in.

At first glance, you might think Cup 4 is the winner as it's right at the bottom. But if you look closer, you'll see the pipe connecting between Cup 3 and Cup 4 has no opening, meaning water can't flow through it. Similarly, Cups 5 and 6 have blockages in the pipes leading to them, meaning that neither cup could be the winning one as water can't get through. If you look closely at Cup 7, you'll find there's a hole right at the bottom, meaning any water seeping through from Cup 2 will simply come out of the bottom.

In fact, the only cup that would be filled is Cup 3. Connected to Cup 1 with a pipe lower than Cup 2, it's the only vessel that can feasibly contain and fill with water. Especially as Cup 2 is not only accessed via a pipe further up Cup 1 but it's also connected to leaky Cup 7 - meaning it will never be full.

If you didn't get this right immediately, hopefully it doesn't leave you with a glass-half-empty mentality. Regular brain teasers can get you used to these kinds of tricks, meaning you look at the around you differently than before.

People gave their answers to the conundrum on X, commenting on the difficulty of it. "That's tricky", said one person. Another person complained, "This is cheating, 4 is plugged."

Keeping your brain working with puzzles is a great way to make sure that you keep your problem solving skills in tact. Whether a crossword, sudoku, video game or a brain teaser, there are so many great ways to keep your memory and cognitive skills sharp.
