The Bad Skin Clinic's new episode reveals how Mohammed rarely leaves his house in Bradford due to a genetic skin condition that has caused hundreds of lumpy tumours to develop on his face.

He has endured over 30 years of living with a condition that "mentally and physically destroys" him. He adds: "It’s hard to live with this condition, you can’t live your normal life as a normal person would do, I don’t want to go out."

The condition is called Neurofibromatosis and he is desperate to see whether anything can be done to remove the tumours.

Attending Dr Emma's clinic with his younger brother Aktar, he discovers while there is no cure, surgery can be done to remove some of the tumours so Mohammed can gain his confidence back.

Dr Emma used laser treatment and a surgical scalpel in the first instance, explaining: "It’s very difficult dealing with a patient who has a chronic condition that is ongoing. As a dermatologist, I like the fact that there is usually a problem in front of me and I can fix it… whereas this is different, and I suppose that’s why this is challenging.

"The interventions that we will do will take some time until you can see the effect of them, but I really believe that by doing a little at a time it’s going to have a big impact on how he views himself and how he faces the .”

In the first round of treatment, she removed a massive 51 neurofibromas from his face. After a few weeks, he had two further visits to the clinic.

Across three surgeries, Dr Emma removes a total of 160 neurofibroma tumours. "That is a lot to do in three surgeries," Dr Emma admitted.

"Most people can’t really manage that. This is going to take surgical intervention on a number of occasions, but over time, these small changes will build up to quite a big transformation for Mohammed.”

Three months on from Mohammed’s first consultation, and Dr Emma’s patient goes to a restaurant for the first time in more than 20 years.

“The surgery has had a big impact on myself. Before, it was depressing, I wasn’t going out much," Mohammed beams.

"But now I have this confidence in me that I can do things, and I can go out alone. My skin looks a bit smoother now, you can’t see many big lumps like I had before.

“It has not cleaned up completely, but it has made a difference to my life."

His brother is also over the moon, saying: "I’ve not seen my brother looking like this for at least 35 years.

"He’s happier, but it’s probably deeper than that. I don’t think there’s a word that could properly, fully describe what he’s feeling. It just makes me feel as though I’ve got my brother back."

Episode 6 of The Bad Skin Clinic airs on Really on November 12 at 9pm. Also available to stream on discovery+.
