Brit discovers 'Little England' in Sri Lanka - with cobblestone paths and red brick houses

Send Push

A British woman on her travels in Sri Lanka was utterly stunned to stumble upon a housing estate that's the spitting image of Britain.

Hopping across to other countries isn't just about unwinding, having a blast, and hitting up famous landmarks it's also a fascinating peek at global lifestyles, embracing cultural customs, culinary delights, attire, and houdrd. You'd bank on Sri Lanka, with its lush landscapes and rich history, to look worlds apart from the United Kingdom.

Yet, a traveller discovered quaint cobblestone pathways wending between red brick houses. Kara Wildbury, better known as okay.kara.travels on Instagram who loves sharing her travel tips, is currently on an Asian adventure.

On her visit to Sri Lankan, she was brave enough to scale the country's "scariest" tower. And during her stay, she happened across Little England, tucked away in Nuwara Eliya.

The charming little spot, merging classic British design with a touch of Sri Lankan flair, absolutely floored her. "It genuinely looks like the UK," Kara said.

In a shared clip documenting her Little England adventure, Kara got there via a tuktuk. She said: "Would you expect to see a UK house estate in Sri Lanka?"

She continued: "I know it might be hard to believe right now, judging by the house behind mind, but I am not actually in the UK. We are travelling around Sri Lanka and currently in a place called Nuwara Eliya and they have a little housing estate called Little England."

Kara couldn't believe the uncanny resemblance of the place to home, marvelling at its "insane" likeness except for the undeniable difference in weather and "beautiful blue skies". She spotted pigeons, "British-looking" flowers, and even typical lampposts there.

The keen explorer also found an old English-style building acting as the local post office, where she sent postcards back to her loved ones for just 30p each.

Her adventure caught attention on Instagram as supporters chimed in. One commenter who'd been there remarked: "It was really cool."

"The ponies roaming around town also add a lot of charm. We went to the park behind the city hall building and there are ponies running around the soccer and cricket fields while people are playing. So cool and definitely one of our favourites," observed another.

A third expressed their delight, "That fascinating, love the English style houses," while someone else quipped with British humour: "The UK wished it looked like this,".
