Apple has released the biggest software update for iPhones, the iOS 18 . The update has begun rolling out for the iPhone models newer than iPhone XS, iPhone XR iPhone SE (second-generation). Among home screen customisation and a new Passwords app , iOS 18 brings several new features for iPhones. Here are the 10 new features that’ll change your iPhone experience.
Put icons anywhere, colour the home screen and more customisation options
With iOS 18, users can now rearrange apps and widgets to their lining, placing them anywhere on the screen. The icons can be resized in two sizes – small and large. Users can tinted icons, which will paint the icons in the colour chosen from the picker or simply choose Dark Mode that’ll darken the whole home screen. Then, there’s also an option to delete a home screen page altogether.
Not just home screen, but the lock screen has gotten further customisable. So, the flashlight and camera controls on the lock screen that you would have seen for so long can now be customised with other Controls, and these buttons could even be for third-party apps.
Lock or hide the apps
The two new options to come in iOS 18 is to lock or hide away the apps. The first option is “Require Face ID” locks the app, and as the name implies opening it will need Face ID. Then, there’s another option “Hide and Require Face ID” option, which hides the app in a hidden folder in App Library, and opening that folder requires Face ID.
A redesigned Control Center…. That’s customisable
The Control Center has undergone a comprehensive redesign, introducing more than a few new Controls, including third-party ones. Just like on home screen, users have the flexibility to customise the layout and even resize the buttons. There can be now multiple pages to accommodate all the controls, since the new Control Gallery has all the Control buttons one could ask for.
Photos app gets a new look
In it’s “biggest redesign ever,” the Photos app in iOS 18 has the library and grid on the screen together. There are filters and time scales to help you search through your library. The new Collection view organises photos by theme and a carousel will show the Collections, among favourite and featured photos.
An all new Passwords app that has all your passwords in one place
iOS 18 introduces a new Passwords app, that saves all the passwords, verification codes, and security alerts. This app syncs across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and even Windows devices.
React with more emojis, use effects on texts, and more in Messages
Now, in the Messages app , one can use any emoji or sticker to react to texts. And while someone’s sending messages, they can format them – like have it bold, italic, and even underline it , or strikethrough the text. Another formatting option is Word Art style effects, which make your texts big, small, shake, nod or even explode.
If you don’t want to send the text right away, then you can choose to schedule it to send later.
RCS comes to iPhones
RCS is here, so your Android friends can also be the part of group conversations. Also, you and your Android friend can have read receipts and can also share pictures in high resolution.
iPhones now too have Game Mode Just like Macs, iPhone now have a Game Mode that Apple says will help delivery high frame rates, and it’ll do so by optimising background activity. Then, if the Game Mode is turned on, one should expect reduced audio latency on AirPods and a more responsive controller feedback.
Summarise web pages in Safari
Safari now automatically highlights important webpage info like directions, people, music, movies, and TV shows. The Reader mode redesign includes a table of contents and article summaries for quick comprehension.
Do maths in the Notes app
The Notes app now includes a built-in calculator, enabling you to instantly solve mathematical expressions while typing. Furthermore, sections are collapsible and there’s an option to highlight text.
